Rare 1981 First Edition Hardcover copy of "Hollywood Genres: Formulas, Filmmaking, & the Studio System" by renowned film scholar Thomas Schatz. AUTHOR INSCRIPTION & PROVENANCE: • Hand-inscribed and signed by author Thomas Schatz on the front free endpaper: "To David Smith — Hope you enjoy. Best Regards, Tom Schatz (class of '70)" • Includes two original 1988 American Film Institute (AFI) provenance items tucked inside: 1. An official AFI Education Services evaluation form for Schatz's seminar "Film Form: Story, Structure and Character" held July 29–31, 1988 at the Goodson Screening Room in Los Angeles. 2. An original 1988 AFI Summer Workshops promotional brochure. • Matches the July 1988 property/received stamp from original owner David D. Smith on the front endpaper (neatly blacked out for privacy). CONDITION DETAILS: • Binding & Boards: Hardcover cloth-and-paper boards are square, tight, and sharp. Features a two-tone design with a woven gold cloth spine, sharp gold foil lettering, and a blind-stamped publisher logo on the rear board. • Dust Jacket: Very Good condition. Vibrant colors with minimal exterior wear and light crinkling along the top edge. • Pages & Interior: Text block is clean, tight, and completely unmarked throughout the main body of the text. Moderate foxing/spotting is present on the endpapers, pastedowns, title page, and preliminary dedication leaves (see photos for close-up details).
