Description

Beautiful and unusual large hand-worked brass vessel/vase with extensive engraved and punch-worked figural decoration. It retains a naturally aged patina with oxidation and discoloration; it is not shiny, polished gold-tone brass. Approximate measurements: Height: 13" Widest diameter: 6" Top opening: 5.25" Weight: 1 lb 14.7 oz Nearly the entire surface is decorated with bands and large lobed medallions featuring human figures, animals, birds, floral motifs and other stylized scenes. The backgrounds are densely filled with individually punched or chased details. Based on my research and comparison with museum and auction examples, the style appears consistent with traditional North Indian brasswork, possibly Benares/Varanasi work. Similar forms and techniques were produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. IMPORTANT AUTHENTICATION NOTE: I am not an antiques expert, and this piece has not been professionally authenticated or examined by an antique dealer or appraiser. The attribution and possible age are based solely on my research and comparison with documented examples. It is listed as antique/vintage, but no specific date, maker or place of manufacture is guaranteed. The vessel appears to be made from relatively thin, worked brass or brass-alloy metal rather than being a heavy cast object. Visible variations in the engraving and punch marks are consistent with hand-worked decoration. The piece has been left unpolished and retains oxidation, discoloration, scratches, wear, surface irregularities and variations associated with handmade construction. Please examine all photographs carefully and make your own assessment of its age, origin and condition. An unusual and highly decorative example of traditional Indian-style metalwork with substantially more figural decoration than commonly encountered small floral brass vases. Sold as pictured and described. Exact age, maker and regional attribution are unknown and not guaranteed.
