Matching Pair Vintage Japanese Hotei Laughing Buddha Figures – Hand Painted & Signed Beautiful matching pair of vintage Japanese Hotei (Laughing Buddha) ceramic figures, both bearing the same red square maker’s seal on the underside. These highly decorative figures depict Hotei, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods and a traditional symbol of happiness, prosperity, abundance and good fortune. The pair includes two different complementary poses: one larger standing Hotei and one seated Hotei. Both carry traditional sacks and fans and feature wonderfully expressive faces. Each figure is richly decorated with colorful red, blue, green and gold polychrome enamels, intricate floral and geometric patterns, raised detailing and extensive gold accents. The decoration is consistent with Japanese Kutani/Kutani-style ceramic work. Both pieces have the same red square seal mark, indicating they were likely produced by the same maker or workshop and were intended as related pieces.
