Description
The Sansui SP-1700 is a classic 3-way, 5-driver vintage loudspeaker system released in the early 1970s (around 1971–1973). These two speakers by their serial numbers were manufactured in January and April 1973. Technical Specifications Design Type: 3-way, 5-driver bass reflex floor/shelf loudspeaker system. Driver Configuration: Woofer: 1x 12-inch (300mm) paper cone. Midrange: 2x 4-inch (100mm) paper cones. Tweeters: 2x 2-inch (50mm) cone-type tweeters. Power Handling: 70 watts nominal/program. Impedance: 8 ohms. Sensitivity: 93 dB / W / m (highly efficient and easy to drive with low-wattage tube or solid-state receivers). Frequency Response: 30 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Crossover Frequencies: 700 Hz and 6,500 Hz. Cabinet & Build: Heavy furniture-grade natural walnut wood cabinet with Sansui’s signature hand-carved wooden Kumiko lattice fretwork grilles. Dimensions: ~25" H x 16.7" W x 10.8" D (640 x 425 x 275 mm). Weight: Approximately 48.7 lbs (22.1 kg) per speaker. Key Features & Cabinet Design Tone Control L-Pads: On the rear terminal board, the SP-1700 features level controls (L-pads) for adjusting the midrange and high-frequency outputs to suit room acoustics or source material. Durable Drivers: Unlike rubber surrounds that dry rot over time, these vintage drivers utilize treated cloth/paper surrounds that hold up remarkably well over decades. Kumiko Grilles: The intricate fretwork grilles are iconic, making them as much a decorative furniture piece as a functional loudspeaker. Sound Profile & Performance Aesthetic & Visual Appeal: These speakers excel at build quality, featuring real wood veneer and striking lattice grilles. Efficiency: At 93 dB sensitivity, they require very little amplifier power to produce high volume, making them a great match for vintage low-wattage receivers or valve/tube amplifiers. Sound Character: The multi-driver layout delivers a forward, projection-heavy midrange with sharp detail, suited for rock, jazz, and acoustic tracks from the 1960s and 1970s. Bass is punchy, though less extended in sub-bass response compared to modern acoustic-suspension or ported designs. Available for pick up only
