Description
Intro by David Daiches Illustrated by Clarke Hutton Publisher: The Heritage Press, New York, USA © 1966 by The George Macy Companies, Inc. 541 pgs Weight: 2.4 lbs Measurements: Length: 6 in / 15 cm Width: 2 in / 5 cm Height: 9.5 in / 24 cm Originally published in 1821. Set in 1575 Elizabethan England, the plot relates the disaster that follows an attempt by Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, to avoid the queen’s displeasure at his marriage & continue his rise to power. Telling no one that he has married Amy Robsart, daughter of Sir Hugh Robsart, he hides his new bride at the home of Richard Varney, whose patron he is. Edmund Tressilian, who had also courted Amy, mistakenly believes that Amy is Varney’s mistress & attempts to persuade her to return to her parental home. Tressilian then informs the queen that Varney has seduced Amy. To protect Leicester, Varney claims that Amy is his wife. The tangled web of lies & betrayals ultimately results in Amy’s death. Kenilworth is a novel of selfishness versus selflessness & ambition versus love. The novel gives a fair depiction of the Elizabethan court. Condition: Pre-Owned, Good. This book was issued to my great-uncle, a member of the Heritage Club in 1966 & it's in excellent vintage condition for a book that's more than half a century old; you can tell it was valued dearly by him. Bright red cloth hardcover. Author name & title imprinted on the spine in gold w/in a red field, & a gold & red crest on the front cover board. The pages are clean & unmarked, the sewn binding is square & tight & there are no signs of prior ownership such as an inscription or a bookplate. The gold slipcase is slightly bent on the right side & shows a few spots of rubbing wear & some visible storage color fading that's commonly found w/ many boxed books caused by its exposure on a bookshelf.
