Description

Exceptional 1930s Bourne & Leigh pottery bowl in the factory-named Pomegranate pattern, produced at Leighton Pottery in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. A particularly decorative example of pre-war English pottery, the bowl features an elaborate all-over fruit and botanical design extending across both the interior and exterior. Large richly colored fruit in yellow, blue and deep red is surrounded by smaller pomegranates, blossoms, berries, winding branches and dense green foliage over a finely stippled cream ground. The extensive decoration creates the layered, almost textile-like appearance prized in English chintz-style pottery, while the substantial bowl form gives the piece exceptional presence when displayed as a centerpiece. A Desirable collector pattern The underside retains the important original factory backstamp reading “POMEGRANATE / LEIGHTON / POTTERY / B & L / B,” together with the distinctive dragon device. Bourne & Leigh was an established Staffordshire earthenware manufacturer whose Leighton Pottery wares became particularly associated with colorful printed and enamelled tableware during the interwar period. The company ceased production in the early 1940s, placing this bowl firmly within the pre-war period of English ceramic manufacture. An excellent addition to collections of Bourne & Leigh, Leighton Pottery, English chintz ware, Staffordshire ceramics or pre-war British pottery, while equally suited to an upscale English country, cottage, traditional or maximalist interior.
