Description

Beautiful Rare Victorian-era 1880s Victorian Family Bible – Gustave Doré Illustrations – Ornate Embossed Leather & Brass Clasps – Philadelphia Samuel Lock & Co. This is a magnificent, oversized example of a late-19th-century American family Bible, published in Philadelphia by Samuel Lock & Co. (No. 303 South Third Street). A true "parlor Bible," this volume was designed as both a spiritual centerpiece and a statement of a family's status. Why This Edition is Rare & Collectible The "Samuel Lock" Imprint: While Philadelphia was a hub for Bible publishing, the Samuel Lock & Co. imprint is less common than others of the period, making it a unique find for regional collectors. Complete "Gothic Revival" Design: This volume retains its original, deeply recessed "quatrefoil" embossed leather covers and fully functional brass clasps, which were designed to keep the massive text block tight and prevent warping. The Doré Connection: This edition prominently features the legendary wood-engraved illustrations of Gustave Doré. Doré was the 19th century’s most celebrated biblical artist, known for his dramatic use of light and shadow. His work defined the visual landscape of the Bible for generations, and having a "Doré Bible" was the pinnacle of Victorian book collecting. Special Internal Features Unused "Family Portrait" Gallery: Includes the rare, thick cardstock pages with die-cut windows designed for early photography (Tintypes or Cartes-de-Visite). These remain crisp and un-punched. Historical Genealogy Entry: Contains a poignant 1950 death record for Clarence M. Moyers of Hellertown, PA, providing a direct link to the Lehigh Valley's history. Comprehensive Text: Includes the Old and New Testaments, the Apocrypha, a Concordance, and the Psalms of David in Metre. Condition: Interior: Exceptionally bright and clean for its age. Very little foxing (spotting) and minimal yellowing. Few pages contain some staining Exterior: Genuine leather shows period-appropriate wear and edge loss. The spine is intact with a beautiful aged patina. Structural Note: The rear hinge shows some separation at the top but remains held firmly by the binding. The brass clasps are bright and snap shut smoothly. An excellent addition for collectors of antiquarian books or a meaningful centerpiece for a Christian home. This Bible represents a significant piece of printing and religious history, a valuable addition to any serious collection.
