Dimensions: Height = 21.5 inches Width = 25.5 inches This is an original one-of-a-kind oil painting by Royce Kugler—a well-regarded, award-winning regional plein air and wildlife painter from Beaverton, Oregon. She studied under legendary master wildlife painters like Robert Bateman and John Seerey-Lester, which explains the exceptional detail and scientific precision shown in this woodpecker's feathers and the texture of the mossy bark. She painted this during her earlier years (1987) and signed and dated it on the front and back. It's in amazing condition, with no noticeable imperfections, and was professionally framed. The frame appears to be made of ash or oak and also looks to be in excellent condition. This painting is of a male Williamson's sapsucker (Sphyrapicus thyroideus) perched on a pine tree. They are a medium sized North American woodpecker and are recognizable by their black head, white facial stripes, red throat patch, and yellow belly. Males feature a glossy black chest, white wing patches, a bright yellow lower belly, and a red throat stripe. These birds are typically found in mountain forests with a mix of conifers (like pine and fir) across western North America. Like other sapsuckers, they drill neat rows of small holes into tree bark to feed on the sap and trapped insects. I've been buying and selling for over 20 years and am finally getting back into letting some things go. Follow my seller profile to see what I put up for sale next!
