Sugar apple trees (Annona squamosa), also known as sweetsops, are small tropical fruit trees prized for their sweet, creamy, custard-like fruit. These trees are about 10 feet tall and produced sweet apples this season. Next season will produce a nice harvest. • Size: Grows 10 to 20 feet tall with an open, spreading canopy. • Foliage: Deciduous, meaning it drops its slender, green leaves in the winter during cooler dry spells. • Hardiness: Thrives best in warm, tropical or subtropical climates within USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11. It is sensitive to frost. • The Fruit • Appearance: Round or heart-shaped, resembling a bumpy green pinecone. The skin breaks apart easily when ripe. • Flavor: Sweet and creamy, similar to vanilla custard mixed with tropical hints like pineapple or mango. • Inside: Filled with segmented white flesh, each containing a small, toxic black seed. NOTE: DO NOT EAT THE SEEDS, THEY ARE TOXIC.
