Description
A rare, early, large piece by Apsit Brothers of California in fantastic condition. Dated 1974 on the back, this would have been among the first hand crafted and painted pieces they produced. Signed "APSIT BROTHERS OF CALIF. c 1974" in raised lettering on lamp base. Subject is a cartoon caricature of a Native American man wearing U.S. army belt and gun holster with cactus at his feet. Style is ‘70s California hippie/funk art. The shade is an original midcentury modern red-orange acrylic half dome that glows nicely when lit. It stands 32" tall. 15” diameter orange shade The base is an oval that is roughy 7.5" x 6.5". It is heavy and solid. Weighs roughly 30 pounds. In 1970, Gary Apsit together with his brothers, founded Apsit Brothers of California, which designed and manufactured decorative statuary. For years, Gary and his brothers had a plant and an adjacent retail store on Kentucky Street, Bakersfield, where they produced and sold limited edition plaster plaques, statues and lamps.
