Description

The plant I ship is about 1-2 ft tall. Last photo are of similar or actual plant. Cyathea cooperi is one of the easiest tree ferns for South Florida because it tolerates heat and humidity much better than many other tree ferns. Light Best: bright shade or filtered light. Morning sun is usually fine. In South Florida, afternoon sun can scorch fronds, especially on young plants. Under high tree canopy is ideal. Water This is the most important factor. Keep the root zone consistently moist. Do not allow the soil to dry completely. During hot weather, water deeply several times per week. Established plants tolerate short dry spells but look much better with regular moisture. A useful trick with tree ferns is to water not only the soil but also the top of the trunk and crown. The fibrous trunk absorbs water. Humidity Loves high humidity. Thrives in Florida's summer conditions. Appreciates occasional overhead irrigation during dry periods. Soil Prefers: Rich organic soil. Good drainage. Plenty of decomposed leaf litter or compost. Ideal pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (roughly 5.5–7). Fertilizer Use a light hand. Good choices: Slow-release palm fertilizer. Slow-release balanced fertilizer. Compost and leaf mold. Too much fertilizer can burn roots and cause distorted fronds. Temperature Ideal: 65–90°F. Excellent heat tolerance. Cold tolerance: Mature plants typically tolerate brief drops to about 28–30°F. Fronds may burn below freezing. The crown is more sensitive than the trunk. Growth Rate One reason it is so popular: Fast for a tree fern. In warm, wet climates it may produce several feet of trunk per year. Much faster than Dicksonia antarctica. Placement in Florida Good locations: East side of a house. Under live oaks. Under palms. Near ponds or water features. Avoid: Hot reflected heat from concrete walls. Dry windy locations. Open western exposure. Common Problems Brown frond tips Usually low humidity or inconsistent watering. Yellow fronds Often nitrogen deficiency or natural aging. Crown rot Can occur if debris accumulates in the crown and stays wet during cool weather. Spider mites Occasionally during dry weather. Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer. You need about 3-4oz per 3 gal pot or 4-5oz per 5 gal pot.
