Description

The plant I ship is about 2-3 ft tall. Last photos show similar or actual plants. Goeppertia loeseneri (syn. Calathea loeseneri), commonly known as Brazilian Star Calathea, is one of the largest and most spectacular members of the Marantaceae family. Native to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, it forms elegant clumps of long, glossy, deep green leaves that create a lush, tropical appearance throughout the year. Unlike many calatheas that are grown primarily for their decorative foliage, G. loeseneri is especially prized for its striking floral display. Mature plants produce tall, branched flower stalks that rise well above the foliage, bearing clusters of star-like white to pale lilac flowers with contrasting yellow accents. The blooms appear suspended above the leaves, giving the plant an airy, architectural quality that makes it an outstanding specimen for shaded gardens. In the landscape, Brazilian Star Calathea performs best as an understory plant beneath palms or trees, where it thrives in bright filtered light and organically rich, well-aerated soil. Its bold foliage and graceful habit blend beautifully with gingers, heliconias, philodendrons, ferns, and other tropical plants. Growing to approximately 4–6 ft (1.2–1.8 m) tall and equally wide, this species creates a dramatic focal point while remaining refined and elegant. It is well suited to tropical and frost-free subtropical climates, where its lush foliage and unusual flowers provide year-round interest. Care Tips Light: Prefers bright filtered light or partial shade. Protect from hot afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves. Ideal beneath trees, palms, or on the east side of a building. Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil begins to dry, and reduce watering slightly during cooler weather. Soil: Plant in rich, well-drained, airy soil high in organic matter. A mix containing compost, pine bark, coco coir, or leaf mold provides excellent root aeration. Temperature: Thrives in warm tropical conditions between 65–90°F (18–32°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as prolonged cold may damage the foliage. Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to outdoor conditions in humid subtropical and tropical climates. Fertilizer: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or a diluted liquid fertilizer to encourage vigorous growth and flowering. Maintenance: Remove old or damaged leaves at the base and trim spent flower stalks to keep the plant attractive. Mature clumps can be divided to propagate new plants. Landscape Use: Excellent as an understory accent, specimen plant, or part of a tropical planting with philodendrons, gingers, heliconias, palms, and ferns. Growth Habit: Forms dense clumps approximately 4–6 ft (1.2–1.8 m) tall and wide. Under favorable conditions, mature plants produce spectacular branched flower stalks that rise above the foliage. Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer. You need about 3-4oz per 3 gal pot or 4-5oz per 5 gal pot.
