Published by The International Society of New York, these volumes were issued as part of the desirable Royal Edition, limited to just 1,000 numbered copies. Bound in half leather over richly marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers and gilt top edges, these substantial volumes retain the distinguished appearance that made the series a centerpiece of well-appointed home libraries at the turn of the century. Included Volumes Volume XIV – Empedocles through Florian, featuring selections and commentary relating to figures such as Epictetus, Erasmus, Euripides, and others Volume XXXIX – Wraxall through Zola, including material relating to Xenophon, William Butler Yeats, Émile Zola, and other notable literary figures Features Royal Edition, Copy No. 722 of 1,000 Published by The International Society, New York Edited by Charles Dudley Warner Half-leather bindings with marbled boards Matching marbled endpapers Gilt top edges Large-format quarto volumes Illustrated plates and portraits throughout 1897 publication Dimensions Approximately 7.5" x 10.5" Condition Good antique condition overall. Both volumes display expected age-related wear, rubbing, and edge wear consistent with over 125 years of age. The marbled boards and endpapers remain attractive, and the gilt top edges are still present. Pages are generally clean with light age toning and the bindings remain remarkably solid internally. One volume retains its original leather spine, while the companion volume has a detached spine panel that is preserved and included. Despite this issue, both text blocks remain intact and display very well on a shelf. Please review all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
