1895 Balzac La Comedie Humaine 6 Vol Set #341 George Barrie Limited Ed

Honoré de Balzac – La Comédie Humaine. Offered here is a scarce 6-volume partial set from the prestigious Édition Définitive of Balzac's monumental literary masterpiece, published by George Barrie & Son of Philadelphia circa 1895. Printed exclusively for subscribers, this edition was strictly limited to 1,000 complete numbered sets; the present volumes are hand-numbered No. 341. Included in this lot are the following volumes: • Volume II – The Petty Bourgeois I • Volume V – House of Nucingen • Volume VI – Memoirs of Two Young Wives • Volume IX – Cousin Pons • Volume X – Splendors and Miseries II • Volume XIII – History of the Thirteen This subscriber's edition features attractive half-leather bindings with gilt-stamped spines, marbled endpapers, gilt top edges, and numerous etchings after paintings by noted artists. The edition was advertised as the first complete English translation of La Comédie Humaine and remains one of the most desirable early English-language Balzac publications. Condition is fair overall and the set is being sold primarily as a binding or restoration project. Two volumes are lacking their boards entirely, while the remaining volumes have detached covers and substantial wear to the leather spines and joints. Losses to leather, peeling, rubbing, edge wear, and other age-related binding issues are present throughout. Despite the external deterioration, the interiors remain generally clean and well-preserved, with the limitation page present and attractive etched illustrations throughout. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and condition report. Book Dimensions: Approximately 8.25" x 6" each.
