Among the most beautiful of flowering trees, the African tulip tree comes from tropical Africa, where it reaches heights of 60 feet (18.3 meters) or more; in San Diego, they average 25 to 40 feet (7.6 to 12.3 meters) tall. When in bloom, the tree puts on a spectacular display, aglow with a profusion of stunning, orange-scarlet flowers. USES: These trees are harvested for various commodities, including food and medicine. It is used for reforestation projects, for soil conservation, and as a crop for the production of plywood and charcoal. African tulip trees attract birds and other wildlife with their copious nectar and ability to hold rain and dew. Appearance: The tree can grow up to 25 meters (80 feet) in height. It has large, pinnately compound leaves with 5 to 15 leaflets. The most striking feature is its showy flowers. Flowers: The flowers are large and trumpet-shaped, with a flaring, five-lobed corolla. They are typically bright orange or red, resembling tulip flowers, which gives the tree its common name. The flowers are arranged in clusters at the tips of the branches. Fruit: The tree produces woody capsules containing numerous winged seeds. The capsules split open when mature, releasing the seeds. Cultivation: Spathodea campanulata is often cultivated as an ornamental tree in tropical and subtropical regions due to its attractive flowers. It prefers full sunlight and well-drained soil. Hardy in zones 10-11. Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer.
