Rare complete 10-volume Centenary Memorial Edition of the Life and Writings of Thomas Paine, edited and annotated by Daniel Edwin Wheeler and published by Vincent Parke & Company, New York, 1908. This deluxe limited edition set was restricted to 1,550 copies, with this example being copy number 355, hand-numbered and signed by the editor. Bound in attractive embossed tan cloth boards with gilt spine lettering and decorative endpapers, the set contains Paine's major works including Common Sense, The Crisis, Rights of Man, The Age of Reason, essays, addresses, letters, and poems. Illustrated throughout with numerous tissue-guarded photogravures and plates. Several leaves exhibit period paper watermarks visible when held to the light, including "Spon" and "Cowan," indicating the use of quality paper stock. A scarce and desirable limited edition library of one of America's most influential political and philosophical writers. Condition Complete 10-volume set. Interiors are generally clean with light age toning and numerous tissue guards present. Front boards remain attractive with embossed decoration and gilt spine lettering remains legible. Spine coverings exhibit heavy age-related deterioration, with flaking, rubbing, darkening, and losses throughout. Two volumes have detached front covers, while Volumes VI, VII, and X show looseness and are beginning to separate. Bindings remain largely intact otherwise, and the interiors are well preserved.
